Suicide is a major problem in clinical psychiatry and the number of suicide deaths has been increasing during the past century. There are many known suicide risk factors such as psychiatric disorders, especially major depression and substance dependence, severe medical diseases, previous suicide attempt, etc. Accurate and quick risk evaluation and appropriate treatment of modifiable risk factors are very important to prevent further suicide attempt in psychiatric emergency. In this paper, we reviewed currently using assessment tools for suicide, and proposed a new suicide risk assessment tool. Brief ER Suicide Risk Assessment (BESRA) is consisted of domains of patient¡¯s demographic factor, clinical evaluation, individual¡¯s psychiatric resources and detailed information about present suicide attempt. This assessment tool has many advantages including multidimensional risk assessment, relatively short time for the administration and easy to apply in the emergency setting. Further researches using BESRA need to be done.
